Andrej Mirčev: Performance Diagrams / Research Wednesday, October 2, 5:30pm CEST / join us!

On October 2 at 5:30 PM CEST, Andrej Mirčev, the postdoctoral fellow in our sister project “Performance: Conservation, Materiality, Knowledge,” is giving a lecture titled “Performance Diagrams” that might be of interest to the community of Fluxus fans and scholars. The lecture, which is part of the Research Wednesday series, can be attended in person at the HKB (Auditorium, Fellerstrasse 11, 3027 Bern) or online (see link below).

The talk examines the concept of performance diagrams by pointing out their historical, epistemic and aesthetic functions for theatre and dance. The background for it is the book “The Poetics of Performance Diagrams” that was recently published by Cambridge Press in which Andrej Mirčev argue that diagrams can provide new tools for theory, practice and archiving, while at the same time enabling a comprehensive reflection on the intersections between poetics and politics. Focusing on the potentiality of diagrams to resist representation and dichotomies, the lecture elucidates the visual, corporeal and spatial dimension of performance. In doing so, Andrej Mirčev elucidates the significance of diagrammatic thinking for performance studies. At the same time, the book and the talk offer a glimpse into the history of theater through the prism of architecture, visual communication and ritual studies.

Andrej Mirčev is an academic, visual artist, and dramaturge. He received his PhD from Freie Universität Berlin, where he was also a Fellow at the International Research Center “Interweaving Performance Cultures” (2017-2018). His research establishes trajectories between memory and performance studies, spatial theory, intermediality and critical pedagogies.
His recent publications include Revolving Documents – Narrations of Beginnings: Recent Methods and Cross-Mappings of Performance Art, diaphanes (co-edited with Sabine Gebhardt Fink, 2024), Diagrams & the Diagrammatic (edited in 2023 for the Routledge journal Performance Research) and The Poetics of Performance Diagrams (Cambridge University Press, 2024).
